Steel & stainless

For the piece that does not exist yet.

Curved, patterned, structural: the work a system cannot do. Carbon steel and stainless, welded in our own shop by a CWB-qualified welder and installed by the same crew.

Where steel winsAgainst aluminum, honestly.

When steel is the right answer — and when it is not

Aluminum is the better material outside, and we will say so on the phone. Steel earns its place when the piece has to be strong, curved, or carry a pattern that no extrusion makes.

Curves
A curved run means every picket is a different length and every bend is set on a jig. There is no catalogue version of a curve.
Patterns
Herringbone, cable, bar screens, arches. The pattern is cut and welded, which is why it can be anything.
Structure
Stair stringers, landings, guards that take a commercial load. Steel carries; aluminum does not, at that scale.
Stainless
Handrails you touch every day, and wet rooms. Brushed or polished, no paint to maintain.
Honestly, not steel
An exposed deck railing in salt and snow is an aluminum job. We will quote it that way.
WeldingThe credential, in the wording that goes on a submittal.

Who welds it

On a commercial package this is the first question an estimator asks, so here it is in full.

Qualification
Welding performed by a CWB-qualified welder (CSA W47.1, SMAW, F4 electrode, carbon steel, flat position, 3 mm thickness and up, valid to 21 Feb 2028).
Finishing
Welds are ground and filled where they are seen, and left honest where they are not. Ask for a close photograph of a joint before you commit — it is where this trade is actually judged.
Finish
Powder coat, paint or blackened steel. Outdoors we specify a zinc protective treatment under the black paint — paint alone is what keeps water off carbon steel, and paint alone is also what fails first.
Code
All railings comply with the Ontario Building Code.
Dimensioned elevation of a main floor stair railing with vertical pickets.
The drawingMain floor stair, GTA — 36 inches on the rake, 42 at the landing: the guard heights the Ontario Building Code asks for, settled before anything was cut. The note on the right is the client’s, choosing the finish.
The same stair built, with vertical pickets and a flat handrail.
The pieceThe same flight, built. Same picket spacing, same handrail profile, same transition where the rake meets the landing.
