Railings & guards

A railing is judged at the anchor, not at the handrail.

Glass, aluminum and steel, measured to your opening and installed by the people who welded it. This page is the honest comparison of the three, including what each one will ask of you later.

Twenty-year warrantyAgainst oxidation on aluminum. Factory, at no cost.
Ontario Building CodeAll railings comply with the Ontario Building Code.
Qualified weldingWelding performed by a CWB-qualified welder (CSA W47.1, SMAW, valid to Feb 2028).
One crewFabrication and installation by our own people. No subcontractors.
What mattersThe five things a railing is actually judged on.

What makes a railing a good one

Most of what goes wrong with a railing is decided before anyone looks at the pattern. These are the five things we settle first, on every job.

Anchorage
Where the post lands and what it lands in. Stone facing over concrete is where cheap railings fail: the plate bites the stone, not the structure.
Guard height
Set by the Ontario Building Code, by the drop below it. We measure the drop, not the drawing.
Opening limits
What can pass between the pickets or under the bottom rail, which is a code item and a child-safety item at the same time.
Finish
Powder coat, paint, blackened steel, brushed or polished stainless. Outside, the finish is the whole lifespan of the piece.
Fabrication
Stairs are rarely square and old houses never are. A piece cut for your opening fits; a catalogue length forced to fit shows at every post.
Materials compared
MaterialWhere it earns its place What it asks of youRelative cost
Glass When the view is the point: a stair in a room you live in, a balcony over a garden, a lobby. Cleaning. Nothing else — the hardware is stainless and the glass does not corrode. Highest
Aluminum Outside. Decks, balconies, pool enclosures, anything that lives in salt and snow. Nothing. It does not rust, and oxidation is covered for twenty years. Middle
Steel When the piece is structural, curved, or has to carry a pattern that no system makes. A finish that is looked after. Paint is what keeps water off carbon steel. Varies with the work in it
Stainless Handrails you touch every day, and wet rooms. It takes fingerprints and keeps its colour. A wipe. No paint to maintain. High

We do not publish a price per foot. A railing is priced on its length, its material, the number of posts and what it anchors into — stone, concrete, wood and tile are four different jobs. A number on a web page that ignores all four is a number that changes when we arrive, and the change is never in your favour.

The three routesPick by where it lives, not by the picture.

Every photograph is a job this crew fabricated and installed. We show the city, never the address when it is someone's home.
